Daine stared at the ice she had passed over less than a week ago. It was still just as solid as it had been then and there were several sets of prints leading into the island. However, there were no tracks headed the other way. The young mare hoped that was because this was a good place to live. For some reason, however, she doubted that. If she didn't enjoy the place, in a year, when the ice was solid again, she would cross back over and go back to the mainland. Turning away from her birthland, she walked into the island of Decessus. Mane and tail tossed irritably. She wasn't actually upset, just antsy. She had no idea what kind of stallion or mare she'd meet here, and the idea of something sinister frightened her.
The grass easily parted as her lithe form moved through. A smile quirked her maw as the scent of water caught in her nostrils. Muzzle quivered as she made her way closer to the source of the fresh smell. She hadn't had any real water in a few days. Of course, she had made do with the little snow and freshwater pools near the ice bridge, but a lake would be nice. Sure enough, a while later, she found the remedy to her problem. And...it was frozen. Daine blew out a cold breath. If she could smell the water, then there was fresh running water somewhere close by. Ah, there it was. She could hear it if she really tried. She turned and started walking around the body of water.

GOOD MORNING DARLING
-------------------- What a nice, brisk day it was, with a stark blue sky and a frost on the ground. Jack threw his head into the air and snorted loudly, watching gleefully as his breath fogged in front of his nose. Laughing loudly, he blew out harder, and harder, and harder, trying to see how far he could project his breath, and wondering if dragons ever got this excited about their breath. He became so absorbed in his breath that he jumped in surprise when his hooves rang against ice. Looking down, he saw he was on the edge of the Northern Pointe, the colossal ice bridge he had crossed two years ago on his way to Decessus. A fant caw in the sky above alerted him to Jessa's presence, but the crow didn't drop lower, and Jack didn't give her more than a whinny of greeting.
He stood and stared at the bridge, willing Joker to come walking down it, towards him so they could go back to the way things were, them against the world. But he knew it wouldn't happen because Jessa said she was already here, she just couldn't find her. Then he imagined his brother coming down the bridge, his body wavering like a mirage. Then the mirage split into two, and it was Poseidon and Queen, and Jack bolted. He didn't stop until he was hidden in the trees, where he hid and trembled and would have cried if horses could cry. He knew they weren't really coming, that it was his over-active imagination, but that was the problem; he didn't know whether it bothered him more that they weren't coming, or that some day they might.
After a few minutes he had calmed down, and he ventured out of his tree copse. As he did, he caught the scent of water, and it cheered him greatly; a drink would surely be nice. He began trotting in the direction of the scent, passing a frozen pond and catching the scent of a mare. Ah, now that was interesting. Turning, he spied her making her way around the pond, not too far off. She was a pretty mare, tan and white and graceful, a mare built for speed rather than brawn. He let out a soft whinny to let her know he was there before trotting up behind her. He pulled up on her left side, matching her gait, and he tossed his head and laughed. "Heyo there lady, would you like any company? I promise I will be the utmost gentleman." He shook his mane and tail and hopped a few feet before settling back into a gait matching hers.

The mare was lost in her own personal little world for a moment. Of course, she wasn't so lost that she forgot where she was or what she was doing. As far as she knew, Decessus was 'hostile territory' and she shouldn't be wandering it alone. Deep down, her inner soul cried out for companionship, but she knew better than to actually ask for it. The gods had a sick sense of humor when you gave them a clean slate to go on. So, minutes passed without much of anything but her and the big world. It was...lonely. That was the only word she could think of to express how she felt. And, for some reason, it didn't feel quite right.
Tall aud twisted and twitched, picking up the sound of hoofbeats. It was too choppy to be pads, too heavy to be a deer. Within the blink of an eye, Daine knew with completely certainty there was a horse behind her. If only the wind were moving the opposite direction, she'd be able to discern its gender and mood. As it was however, the hoofbeats quickened their pace and steadily grew louder. Whoever it was, it was coming closer. Quickly, very quickly, she turned her head to look at the approach. Stallion, well built. He didn't have the number of scars that she had associated with Decessus though. That was worth looking into in the future. Without meaning to, Daine's guard went up.
She didn't know the stranger and wasn't entirely sure she'd want to know him. Then again, there was nothing sinister in his gait. In fact, if anything, he seemed to just be catching up to her, not chasing her down in the least. A quick assessment of his limbs and the toning in his shoulders and flanks told the mare that if push came to shove, she could most likely not outrun him, provided she could get away to begin with. After a second's hesitation that he probably couldn't even see, she let him fall easily into step beside her. It would be better if they could talk and her not provoke him.
At his voice however, most of Daine's fear vanished. He spoke of nothing more than companionship, something she desired. And, for a moment, he acted a fool. It quickly brought a smile out that reached her eyes. "Well," she replied. "I would be more than happy to have a gentleman lead me around." As soon as the words left her velvet lips, she wished she could take them back. It sounded like she was throwing herself at him. "That is...if you stay on good behavior." There, that fixed it. No flirting, just...acceptance of his presence. That couldn't be construed, could it?

GOOD MORNING DARLING
-------------------- When her eyes sparked with a smile, his body warmed with pleasure; he liked nothing better than making others happy. It was just his nature, he was a people-pleaser and clown, better suited to the role of court jester than king, but determined to step above his place. Her response was amusing, but a little disheartening; it was a bit flirtatious, which was fine, but too inviting, too open for a less moral stallion to take advantage of her. Ah, there, she had realized how her reply had sounded, and hastened to press a boundary down. He laughed and tossed his head in agreement. "I give my word that I will remain on my best behavior, although that isn't saying much." While he would never sink so low as to treat her cruelly or try to push her into any arrangements she disliked, he was often little better than an excitable yearling, and mares tended to become frustrated with him. Not Joker. Never Joker. She just abandoned him.
"Perhaps I should clarify that. I do not mean I will be a cad, I disdain ill manners, but I must confess I have a great amount of energy, and I may try your nerves." A breeze purred its way through the trees above them, and a chickadee lighted from a branch and flew away so fast its wings seemed to move as fast as a hummingbird's. Seconds later a massive crow lighted on the tree and cawed hoarsely. She was a lovely creature, by the standards of crows, and by the standards of Jack. He was drawn to her sleek irridescent feathers, inky in the shade, her glittering dark eyes, her sharp beak built for carrion. He had no liking for carrion, the scent and sight naturally repulsed him, but the very idea that a creature could live off of it was fanscinating, as was the idea of flight. He could run so fast he felt like he was flying, but that was not the same as lifting your body off the ground and soaring high in the sky.
The black bird uttered another caw, shifting from leg to leg on her branch and fluffing her feathers in wary curiosity; her eyes on the palomino mare. He didn't know her name. She didn't know his. He did not introduce Jessa, he never did; she didn't like it. Crows didn't like horses, no sensible animal did, and Jack was never quite certain how Jessa felt about him. She relayed news of areas of Decessus that he didn't frequent, the state of the herds there, and scouted the island for his sister, but she was snappish to him, and spent most of her time elsewhere, and after two years she had yet to find Joker. He was sure she knew where Joker was, and simply wouldn't tell him. Despite this, he liked her a great deal, even saw her as a friend.
After a time of staring at the mare, Jessa flew off, and he knew it would be some time before he saw her again. He dismissed her from his mind. "It occurs to me that I have not introduced myself, and that is quite inconsiderate. My apologies; I am Jack of Spades, the leader of the Catalyst herd." He hadn't mentioned his rank to impress her, it wasn't his style; but having been raised by equine royalty, it was second nature to give his name and rank as one. Besides, it was obvious she hadn't been on Decessus very long, and it was unlikely she had found a herd to settle into. Perhaps she wasn't seeking a herd, but it was always wise to travel in groups when you were a horse. This way, if she knew that he was a herd leader now, and then learned that he genuinely was a respectable gentleman, perhaps it would ease any anxiety she had.
